CORRECTION: 278th Still Awaiting Deployment Date

The Tennessee National Guard's 278th ACR will deploy to Iraq in 2009.

The Defense Department today announced force rotations for Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment was put on a alert last week for possible deployment to Iraq sometime in 2009 or 2010.

The Department of Defense announced the Tennessee National Guard Unit will be among the 14,000 troops deploying to the Middle East next year.

The unit was last in Iraq in 2004 and 2005.

The 278th will deploy with brigades from Texas, Pennsylvania and Louisiana. All four brigades will be tasked with base defense and route security in Iraq and Kuwait.

The 278th was put on alert last week. It includes detachments in Rogersville, Kingsport, and Greeneville.
