The State Corporation Commission gave Appalachian Power Company permission to increase fuel bills in Virginia by more than 12-percent, before hearing the company's formal request.
The SCC scheduled a public hearing in Richmond for September 23rd, but the increase -- from 1.418 cents to 2.255 cents per kilowatt hour -- takes effect September 1st.
Appalachian Power attributed the increase to higher coal prices.
The SCC will consider two additional rate requests for Appalachian.
The company has one-million customers in Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee.
