A man who loved the news and served as President Bush's Press Secretary died over the weekend from complications from colon cancer. On Tuesday, a Rogersville, Tennessee woman remembered snow, who she considered a friend.
"We've cried a lot around, the girls and I," said Lori Vance, Rogersville, resident.
She said the last few days have been hard for her and her family.
"He was just such a great encouragement to me always and that's one thing I'll really miss," said Vance.
She first met Tony Snow in 1997, when he wrote for the Washington Times. Snow did a story penned a story about Vance and her daughter, Donna Joy. They were at the center of a debate over partial birth abortion. While 7 months pregnant with her third child, Vance said doctors told her, due to a brain defect, Donna Joy would probably not survive. Today, she is 16 years old.
"She wasn't just someone that he covered for the media, he really cared about her, about her life and how she was doing," Vance said.
She recalled talking with Snow after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2005.
“Instead of walling in self pity, and thinking, why me, he was thinking about other people and what they must be going through who are less fortunate than he,”
She last spoke with him around the time he started work as president bush's press secretary at the White House. But the two kept in touch through email.
"The only thing that keeps me going are the memories that I have of him," she said.
Vance said that Snow wanted her to have a book written about everything her and her daughter experienced during their part in the debate over partial birth abortion. As a tribute to Snow, Vance hopes to find an author and get a book published before Snow’s next birthday.
Funeral services for Tony Snow will be held Thursday. President and Mrs. Bush will attend the services.
