The Tennessee Department of Transportation began inspecting Interstate signs on Wednesday just two days after one of them fell onto Interstate 65 south of Nashville. T-DOT crews were busy inspecting cantilever signs in Kingsport and other parts of the Tri-Cities and the state on Wednesday. The signs are just like the one that fell in Nashville on Monday.
Adam Wallen is a bridge inspection engineer based out of Johnson City. He and other workers combed Intestate 26 stopping at each cantilever sign. They inspected all anchor bolts, flanges and footings. They also performed what’s called a dye penetrate test on the signs. Wallen said the dye penetrate makes cracks and hair line cracks more visible. Wallen said that safety is a top priority.
“This is a public safety issue, so we want to get this straightened out just as soon as possible,” Wallen said.
Inspectors found cracks in a sign in Sullivan County. It was removed on Wednesday and will later be replaced. There are 23 cantilever signs in the Tri-Cities region. Sullivan County has the most with 15.
