A free and confidential tool in the fight against heart disease is being offered by Mountain States Health Alliance and is as close as the nearest computer. HeartAware is a short online test available at www.msha.com that determines a person’s risk for heart disease in about seven minutes. For those at risk, Mountain States is also offering free additional health screenings by registered nurses to help prevent an actual heart attack or stroke.
“Nationally, nearly half of the people who suffer from heart attacks are under 55 years of age, and a slight majority of those who have attacks are women, which counters the popular notion that heart disease is a male issue,” said Cindy Salyer, Vice President of Cardiovascular Services at Mountain States. “We are offering this free service for the community to help those at risk head off serious problems. It’s important for those who could potentially have a heart attack or stroke realize it ahead of time and take the appropriate steps for prevention.”
The test takes about seven minutes and asks a series of simple lifestyle and health information questions, from daily exercise levels to family history. If the questions lead to the determination that a person is at risk for a heart attack or stroke, additional information is requested that will allow the test taker to be contacted by a Mountain States representative to set up a free health screening.
The process is completely free and the information is confidential.
“We have had HeartAware live on our Web site for less than a week; already nearly 1,000 people have taken the test, and nearly 10 percent of those have been identified as high risk and will be coming in for additional free screenings,” said Lori Hamilton, Mountain States Corporate Director of Health Resources. “This is a valuable tool for those in the community who may not be aware of their risk. This test is seven minutes that could save your life.”
