Sen. Barack Obama appeared with Gov. Tim Kaine during campaign stops in Chester and Chesapeake Virginia Thursday. The rallies fueled more speculation about Kaine's place on Obama's list of vice-presidential possibilities.
Obama told USA Today, his mind is made up, but won't reveal his choice until Saturday afternoon, in a text message to campaign supporters. He offered a cryptic description of his selection: someone independent, someone who would challenge him in the White House, and someone who would strengthen the U.S. economy.
Virginia state Senator Phillip Puckett (D-38th Dist.) listed the economy as one of Kaine's strengths. Puckett, a Kaine confidant, said, "It's going to be a stretch for Democrats to take Virginia, regardless of who is on the ticket, because we haven't voted for a Democratic President since 1964."
