A necropsy on the bear shot and killed by Great Smoky Mountains Park rangers has revealed
that part of a hiker's shoe was in the bear's stomach.
The attack happened last week...on Sunday night... along Rainbow Falls Trail. That's where the black bear attacked 8-year-old Evan Pala as
he played in a creek. Officials believe the shoe belongs to Evan's father, John, who fought the bear off.
Park officials said the attack appeared to be one in which the bear stalked the boy as prey, and there was no evidence the family provoked the bear.
Park officials also said the bear targeted little Evan because he was the smallest member of the family.
