EMORY, Va. – In a new college ranking by Forbes magazine, Emory & Henry College is ranked among the top 100 schools in the nation.

E&H came in No. 98 overall – considerably higher than its third-tier ranking among Liberal Arts Colleges in this year’s U.S. News and World Report ranking.

College spokesman Dirk Moore said it’s because the Forbes ranking looks at colleges from a different perspective.

“It really is focused on student satisfaction … and quality of teaching,” Moore said. “What they’re really trying to focus on is what happens in the classroom.”

According to the Forbes article, its ranking methodology “attempts to put itself in the student’s shoes,” and it rates institutes of higher learning based on “the quality of education they provide, and how much their students achieve.”

In the Forbes ranking, small liberal arts colleges like E&H outshine some of their better-known peers, “probably due to both the quality of their faculty and the personal attention they can provide,” according to the article explaining the results.

Moore said he’s glad to see a ranking that recognizes schools for their devoted alumni and ranks the student experience more highly than a school’s reputation among peer institutions.

But, he said, every school has its niche – and individual students searching for a college should focus more on what school is a good fit for them, not just others’ rankings.

“There’s a lot of good educational institutions in the area, and they all, I believe, do an excellent job of performing their missions,” Moore said.

“I’m really glad to be a part of the education network, not just colleges and universities, but we’ve got some excellent high schools and a lot of excellent teachers out there who are teaching elementary students and high school students,” he continued.

“That’s one thing this region can really build on, is the strength of our educational institutions here.”
