Dollywood turns to ice

»  Comments | Post a Comment

With flawless precision, skaters jump and spin. Then they land, gliding away on ice. And, for the first time, such skaters are doing that at Dollywood.

The park’s Celebrity Theatre features Dollywood’s “Christmas on Ice” with four shows a day, Thursday to Sunday, through Dec. 30.

“My new Dollywood’s Christmas on Ice show is filled with some of my very favorite Christmas songs, beautiful costumes and incredibly talented ice skaters,” park spokeswoman Dolly Parton said in a release.

“It’s the first ice rink we’ve ever created at Dollywood,” Parton said, “and I just can’t wait for folks to see all the unbelievable twists and spins, along with, of course, the entire park that’s filled with all of the many wonderful sights and sounds of Christmas.”

The “Christmas on Ice” show features the Ice Theater of New York, a premier ice dance ensemble, performing a variety of Christmas classics like “Jingle Bell Rock” and “O’ Come All Ye Faithful.”

Right now, you’ll also see Santa Claus figurines in the flowerbeds and lights that look like birds, soaring above the maze of walkways in the popular Pigeon Forge park, as well lights outlining the wooden raceway of the Dollywood Grist Mill.

It’s all part of Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas.

Why, there are even Christmas trees and lights lining the interior of the decades-old Blazing Fury ride at Craftsman’s Valley.

This time of year, you can also jump on the motion chairs of the Imagination Theatre and take a ride on the Polar Express – with a 12-minute clip of the animated movie shown with 4-D effects, including the smell of hot chocolate.

Santa Claus is also making appearances at Santa’s Workshop, until Dec. 23, amid displays of his-and-hers snowmen plus larger-than-life-size toys like wagons and a View-Master showing Santa in the lens.
