"In Her Sister’s Shadow," James Campbell (JaMar Publishing, 2010, $12.95)

For years, James Campbell has toured the local festival circuit, selling a book called "Luther’s Mule."

He’s won a reputation as a master salesman, a tale-spinner and an all-around smooth talker. He’ll tell you his second novel, "Ida Mae: Moonshine, Money and Misery," came from his own school of hard-knocks, growing up in Southwest Virginia.

Campbell, a resident of Tazewell County’s Baptist Valley, has likely spent more time selling books at fairs and festivals, it seems, than writing.

It has, after all, now been seven years since the release of "Ida Mae."

But, folks, it should now come as big news to Campbell’s fans – and, literally, there are thousands – that he’s finally released a sequel to "Ida Mae" with "In Her Sister’s Shadow."

This time, Campbell has published it through his own JaMar Publishing. And he’s enlisted fellow authors from Russell County, Va. – Doris Musick and Denvil Mullins – to provide endorsements.

"In Her Sister’s Shadow" follows the tale of a young mountain girl who aspires to follow in her older sister’s footsteps. Like "Ida Mae," it’s loaded with action – and lots of descriptions of local places, including Cleveland, Va., and Mount Airy, N.C.

James Campbell is signing books on State Street at the Rhythm & Roots Reunion, Sept. 17-19, in downtown Bristol. For more, visit www.jamescampbellbooks.com.

"For the Love of Rachel," Sally Campbell Repass (AuthorHouse, 2010, $13.99)

Sally Campbell Repass likes to write about romance and provides a warm, engaging story in "For the Love of Rachel," a book with moral overtones and lots of dialogue. Repass called it "an inspirational romance book." "For the Love of Rachel" follows the story of a woman whose parents were killed when she was 10 years old.

Then, that woman’s Aunt Pat raised her.

Later, she falls in love. Only, in time, she lost that love, Mitch – to a death. As the story unfolds, however, Rachel finds that God gives her strength to love again.

This is not Repass’s only book. Earlier this year, the Marion, Va., resident had a children’s fairytale book published called "Princess Kari & the Golden Haired Boy."

"Heart With Joy: A Novel," Steve Cushman (Canterbury House Publishing, 2010, $14.95)

Author Steve Cushman, of Greensboro, N.C., offers a coming-of-age novel in "Heart With Joy," a book about young Julian Hale, whose life turns upside down after a move from North Carolina to Florida.

In the end, young Julian has to decide if he should live with his father or mother.

This is Cushman’s second novel. His first, "Portisville," won the Novello Festival Press Literary Award for 2004.
