Painted Ladies

If you like mysteries, check out “Painted Ladies” by Robert B. Parker (hardcover, $26.95, 2010).

This book, published after Parker died earlier this year, continues his popular series about Spenser, a wise-cracking Boston private investigator.

In this one, Spenser is hired to protect Ashton Prince, an art historian, during an exchange of cash for “Lady with a Finch,” a rare, 17th-century painting that’s being held for ransom. But things go south, and Ashton is blown to bits by a bomb during the exchange. Naturally, Spenser sets out to even the score, and he starts digging into everything from Prince’s life to the history of the painting to the museum that owns the artwork.

Nobody beats Parker when it comes to writing sparse, but witty, dialogue, and this book continues that tradition. Spenser is his usual tough, confident self, and lots of favorite characters from the series are featured here. If you’re looking for a quick read and a break from the holiday madness, consider this book.
