Play set to run Nov. 20-21 at Holston Hills Country Club in Marion
MARION, Va. – Marion’s own thespian troupe, the Royal Oak Players, is set to stage “The Sugar Bean Sisters” on Nov. 20-21 at the Holston Hills Country Club.
It’s a dinner theater thing, so come both hungry and ready to be entertained.
The sisters, Faye and Willie Mae Nettles, live in a rundown shack in the middle of a wild sugar cane field/swamp where they are awaiting the return engagement of outer-space aliens.
They are also dealing with awful flying cats, giant ’skeeters, the Reptile Woman, hungry ’gators and, now, a strange arrival by one Miss Videllia Sparks who has come, so she claims, to observe the aliens’ return. From there, it just gets whackier.
Unfortunately, because the Players only do two nights of their productions, I had to drop in and see the play in early rehearsal, but if past experience is any guide, it ought to be fun.
Joannie McCleary plays the mysterious Videllia Sparks, and Angie Burnop is Faye Clementine Nettles.
A newcomer, Debbie Spencer, however, promises to be especially memorable as Willie Mae Nettles, who is eaten up with religion, angst and the conviction that drinking Coca Cola is a sure ticket to Hades – although drinking Dr. Pepper is quite okay.
Amanda Currin plays the reptile woman who, along with Ron Thomas, rounds out the cast.
Even though it is hilariously funny, “The Sugar Bean Sisters” has more than a little edge to it as, of course, good comedy should.
There are plenty of subtle and not-so-subtle digs at religion, morality and society’s view of what constitutes “normal,” whatever that is.
The food is also good at these country club productions, so both evenings promise to be enjoyable. On both nights, the meal is served at 6 p.m., and the curtain rises at 7:30.
