CHARLIE LOUVIN
If influence equals power, then Country Music Hall of Fame member Charlie Louvin sure is a powerful man.
The longtime member of the Grand Ole Opry will appear on Nov. 14 at the Jonesborough Visitors Center. Headlining this installment of the Music on the Square Winter Concert Series, Louvin will climb on stage in full knowledge that along with his late brother, Ira, he influenced not country singers, but rock and pop ones, too.
Check the list. From the rock and pop fields, Louvin Brothers devotees included the Beatles and the Byrds from yesterday, and U2 and Beck from today.
That helped garner the 81-year-old Louvin recent touring slots on several punk rock tours. His sound? Rich harmonies built on simple songs that packed a wallop.

IIIRD TYME OUT
Simply superb. So much so that IIIrd Tyme Out could be considered a bluegrass super group. The Georgia-based band slated to appear on Nov. 14 at Down Home in Johnson City numbers among the genre’s elite. Founded in 1991 with members drawn from Doyle Lawson’s band Quicksilver, often referred to as a “school of bluegrass,” IIIrd Tyme Out based their style on frequently unconventional sounds. To wit, their lively cover of country legend Ernest Tubb’s “Thanks a Lot.”
More than that, lead singer Russell Moore’s voice mirrors the reach of a high-peaked mountain. When Moore sings, IIIrd Tyme Out soars.

CARMEN
A man carved of wood weeps and laughs not, but then only a man carved of wood would cease to be moved by “Carmen.”
Georges Bizet’s classic opera stages on Nov. 14 at Appalachian State University a short and scenic drive away in Boone, N.C.
Performed by the touring theater company Teatreo Lirico D’Europa, for a relative pittance those curious about or ensconced in opera can attend one of the world’s greatest operas in “Carmen.”
Comedy mixes with sentimentality in “Carmen.” Set in Seville, Spain, the opera features the gypsy Carmen and her love interest, Don Jose. Scan the opera, and themes of sizzling love and fractural jealousy lead to revenge and murder. Life exploded, that’s “Carmen.”
