For Jason Michael Carroll, honesty is the best policy.
At least, that’s the mantra the new country singer follows with his stage shows, Carroll said during a recent telephone interview.
“This business is kind of funny,” said Carroll, who grew up near Oxford, N.C., just below the Virginia line.
“As an artist, you only have a certain amount of time with your fans,” he said. “That’s the time you’re on stage. And you want them to know who you are.”
Who is Carroll?
Well, at 29, this father of four young children – ages 2 to 8 – describes himself as a singer who performs music that is “genuine” and “heartfelt.”
Now on the road to support a new CD release, “Waitin’ In the Country,” Carroll’s hits have included “Livin’ Our Love Song” and “Alyssa Lies.”
He has a new single – “I Can Sleep When I’m Dead.”
Also on the album is “No Good in Goodbye,” a vocal duet with Jewel.
Carroll’s record came out in 2007. But wait – he’s actually been at this game of music for quite a long time.
The singer released his first album – a self-financed debut CD – in 1999.
“We just burned them off the computer and sold them,” Carroll said. “But we sold quite a few.”
Carroll cites his influences as Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley and Brooks & Dunn.
“I like to write as much as I can,” Carroll said. “I really would like a long career at this.”
Carroll, who lives near Nashville, has played shows around Virginia – in places like Lynchburg, Danville, Richmond and Virginia Beach.
And now?
He looking forward to venturing forth into the mountains of Wise County, as he performs on June 4 at the Virginia-Kentucky District Fair.
“We kind of pride ourselves on our show,” Carroll said. “When people leave our shows, I want them to be satisfied.”
