JCCT to present ?To Kill a Mockingbird?

JOHNSON CITY – The Pulitzer Prize-winning classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be presented this month at Johnson City Community Theatre.  Performances will be held April 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. and April 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.  The show is sponsored by Wellmont Health System and The Loafer.

Dramatized by Christopher Sergel from the novel by Harper Lee, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is set in Maycomb, Ala., during the summer of 1935.  A Negro man has been arrested for attacking a white girl, and lawyer Atticus Finch, played by John Nagy, has been asked to defend him.  Most folks don’t understand why Finch would consider defending him, and as a result, Finch and his family fall victim to cruel insults, town gossip, and even threats from the alleged victim’s vicious father.

This turmoil is particularly confusing to Atticus’ youngest daughter Scout, played by Emily Nagy (who is the real-life daughter of John Nagy).  Always asking questions, Scout doesn’t understand why people do the things they do.  The story is told through the adult eyes of Scout, whose real name is Jean Louise.   Played by Laura Humphrey, Jean Louise returns to her hometown and recounts from the sidelines the events that took place which forever changed her life.

As the trial date nears, another story develops in the Finch neighborhood as Scout, her bother Jem (Zach Schaftlein), and friend Dill (Adam Ordway) focus their attention on the mystery of Boo Radley, who lives just down the street.  Boo has never left his home, and the kids begin plotting ways to bring Boo out of the house. Both stories become intertwined and lead to a dramatic conclusion.

The cast includes Steve Bashor, Pat Beard, Dennis Brooks, Kevin Burke, Vincent Dial, Ammi Gouge, Anne Koehler, Jeff Light, Lindsay Light, Bill Linne, Stefanie Murphy, Micheal Scott, Audra Smith, Dennis Smith, Joe Smith, and Luke Wexler.

This show contains language taken directly from the original text and movie that may be considered racially offensive.  Parental guidance is recommended.

Tickets are $10 for students and seniors (55 and up) and $12 for adults.  For ticket reservations, call (423) 926-2542 or visit www.jcct.us.  JCCT is located at the corner of Maple and Afton streets.
