Short Takes: A look at weekend entertainment

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Entertainment abounds throughout the Mountain Empire this Christmas season. For those who like to rock, here’s a real dandy to consider.

Johnson City-based Tarnished headlines Crowbar in Johnson City on Dec. 21 and then takes the stage at O’Mainnin’s in Bristol Tennessee on Dec. 29. See one or see both, and hear a band that boasts a sound that rocks with reason.

Formed in 2004, Tarnished includes the searing vocals of Saad Al-Ameri and the melodic guitar of Travis Wright. The four-man, thought-provoking alternative rock band rocks for those who want it loud, and yet offers strong lyrics for those who like their rock with a brain attached.

CHRISTMAS IN APPALACHIA

Christmas demands time and energy amid patience and money galore. For those looking to sit back and soak in the season, read on.

The Roadside Theater presents “Christmas in Appalachia” on Dec. 22 at the Jettie Baker Center in Clintwood. Featuring the stellar talents of Ron Short, the show features local folks such as Maggie Stanley and the Ridgewood Boys in a look back via music on how Christmas was celebrated in generations past throughout Appalachia.

Expect neither flash nor particular form. Instead, folks who come are welcome to stand and sing along to time-honored carols, or to simply come and enjoy the sounds of the season when a community gathers to celebrate together. Experience mountain culture at its heart.

ANNIE MOSES BAND

Talent for music typically runs in families.

Boy, does that ever hold true for the Annie Moses Band. Scheduled to conclude their Christmas, Bright and Beautiful Tour on Dec. 22-23 for free at Celebration Church in Blountville, the chamber music ensemble consists of the Wolaver family – brothers and sisters Jeremiah, Gretchen, Annie, Alex, Camille and Benjamin, along with their parents Bill and Robin.

Expect a full-on Christmas show from a more hip slant on classical music. Classical forms a background upon which they’ve heaped elements of hap-cat jazz and pop. Listen for carols that pop with sizzle. Hear a band that’s as alternative as music gets these days.
