Highlands Ballet and Bristol Ballet have collaborated for the last two years on a very successful production of “The Nutcracker.” This year they have joined together to bring “A Christmas Carol” as a ballet production to area audiences.
"A Christmas Carol," as a ballet, is a magical production of dance, theater, and music all wrapped into one glorious Christmas package.
A Christmas Carol is a wonderful old tale that has been portrayed in many different forums in our area, but never featured as a full length ballet until 2001, when first presented by the Highlands Ballet. The production has been choreographed especially to parallel Charles' Dickens' stirring classic. It has however, been done in other parts of the United States and in Europe and has been received with much deserved success.
"A Christmas Carol" is a heartwarming account of a long ago time of privation, egoism, and valor that stirs in everyone the same feelings of love, forgiveness and repentance that transformed Scrooge from a grumbling “Bah! Humbug!” old man to sharing Tiny Tim’s happy “God bless us, everyone!”
This most beloved story is as much a part of a traditional Christmas as mistletoe, plum pudding, carolers, holly wreaths and candlelight processions. It was first published in 1843 and has not been out of print since that time. It brings to the holiday season a beloved group of fictional characters: Scrooge, Marley’s Ghost, Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future are as familiar as the Christmas tree and Santa Claus.
Dickens himself read his heartwarming tale publicly on Christmas Eve to listeners. It evokes both the gloom and disappointment of those who lack the Christmas spirit, and the joy of those who raise a wassail cup to goodwill toward mankind.
This version will include more than 65 dancers, actors and vocalists from the Highlands and Tri-Cities area, including dancers from Highlands Ballet and Bristol Ballet, and Shea Clay & the Patrick Henry Chamber Choir. In addition, New York actor/dancer Charles Haak, will play Scrooge, professional dancer Sean Hilton of Manchester, England, will play Bob Cratchit, and Jeffrey Polston of Boston will play Scrooge’s nephew.
“Don’t miss this expansive production that embodies wonderful holiday music, original choreography, lush period costumes, scenic design, and special effects. Dancers, actors and singers have willingly given much of their time to this endeavor in order to bring something very special to the Holiday Season,” said Artistic Directors Deanna Cole-Roberts, Deirdre Cole and Michele Plescia.
Public performances are Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theater in Bristol. For ticket reservations call the Paramount box office at (423) 274-8920.
