A man already charged in connection with two robberies last week has been charged with a third that happened the same night.
Joshua Raymond Scarberry, 28, of Bristol, Tenn., has now been charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon in Sullivan County.
According to an affidavit filed in general sessions court, he matched the description of a man who attempted to rob Big Orange Market on state Route 126 Thursday night.
The man got away empty-handed after a scuffle with the owner, and took off in a light-colored car, according to police.
Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office investigators talked with detectives from both Bristol, Tenn., and Bristol, Va., and believe that the same man robbed or attempted to rob three convenience stores on the same night, the affidavit said.
Scarberry is charged in Bristol, Tenn., with armed robbery, and with armed robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in Bristol, Va. He’s accused of taking hundreds of dollars in cash from two convenience stores on both sides of Bristol, as well as cigarettes and alcohol.
Sheriff’s Office investigators recovered a tan jacket and other clothes they believe he wore during the attempted Big Orange Market robbery in a gold car that belongs to Scarberry’s girlfriend, according to the court documents. His girlfriend told police she didn’t know he “was going to rob Big Orange Market,” according to the affidavit, and she “stopped behind the market and Scarberry went up the street and into the store.”
No one else has been charged in connection with the robberies, and the case is still under investigation, said Leslie Earhart, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office.
