BRISTOL, Tenn. – Johnny Royston walked into the Bristol Sessions courtroom Monday morning with a cut still open on his forehead. The convicted killer is accused of typing up, raping and strangling a woman, who hit him in the head with a coffee pot to get away.
His preliminary hearing was rescheduled for Sept. 14, though the judge said that is likely to change.
Royston, 60, was released from prison 18 months ago and is now charged with aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder.
In 1998, Royston stabbed his live-in girlfriend in the neck and then set their trailer on fire with her body inside. He was charged with first-degree murder, though he pleaded down to voluntary manslaughter and arson and served just over a decade in prison.
He is being held without bond at the Sullivan County Jail.
