New Johnston Memorial Hospital To Be Patient-Friendly

ABINGDON, Va.Johnston Memorial Hospital unveiled concept drawings on Thursday for its planned new facility on Lee Highway.

Matching in architecture to the cancer center already constructed on the site, the 260,000-square-foot, L-shaped complex will include the main hospital, the cancer center and a medical office building.

"We really plan for it to be patient-friendly, from the private rooms to easy access throughout the facility," said hospital CEO Sean McMurray. "It’ll be a good thing for the community."

The concept drawing for the three-story complex includes a glass atrium, extending the height of the three floors at the main entrance, and based on the drawing, the interior will be similar to the inside of the cancer center.

Chief Operating Officer Steve Givens said the site’s roads will be labeled and configured to make it easy for patients to find their way to where they need to go.

The hospital will also have separate entrances for ambulance and walk-in emergency room patients, and a helipad at the entrance.

Another change Givens noted is the food service area, which he said will be more upscale and open longer hours to accommodate greater use.

Givens said doctors’ offices will likely be located in the medical office building, in addition to certain hospital services. He said the new site will make it easier for the hospital to grow and provide more services.

He said he also expects other office buildings will eventually locate nearby on the 62-acre site, and if the right-of-way can be obtained, he would like to see an access road from Exit 22 of Interstate 81, as well as the main entrance on Lee Highway.

Givens said he expects state approval by next month for the new facility and county approval, which will include a special-use permit, over the summer.

"We’re looking to break ground in the fall," Givens said.

The new facility is scheduled to open in 2010.
