Back pay granted for some Holston Army Ammunition employees

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) - About 280 contract employees at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport have begun receiving about $2.5 million in back pay.

Checks were handed out to 65 current employees of Wackenhut Services Inc. on Tuesday at the depot. Former workers will also receive payments, ranging from $200 to $50,000.

The payments come after about 85 fire and security workers filed a complaint with the Labor Department in 2005. It claimed the Wackenhut employees' pay and benefits were lower than mandated by the McNamara-O'Hara Service Contract Act of 1965.

U.S. Rep. David Davis confirmed the government ruled in favor of the workers.
