ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) - The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will allow an Erwin company to store more uranium. That decision makes some residents unhappy.
Nine gallons of highly enriched uranium leaked at Nuclear Fuel Services last year. The regulatory commission says only luck prevented the spill from exposing workers to a deadly dose of radiation.
Erwin resident Barbara O'Neil called the decision to allow more uranium at the facility a "slap in the face" for the community.
But the company says the additional storage poses no hazard to residents.
In a statement, Nuclear Fuel Services says the federal agency's review found that all necessary safeguards are in place.
