The Everybodyfields

Out of all the sad, maudlin words Johnson City alt-country stalwarts The Everybodyfields ever put together perhaps none were sadder than when they posted that they were disbanding in June of 2009, so that Sam Quinn and Jill Andrews could pursue their solo careers.

When they strapped on their respective instruments Friday night at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tenn. it felt as if an old friend was stopping by for a cup of coffee and to reminisce about old times.  With each string plucked and chord strummed I was reminded of so many late Johnson City nights.  The Everybodyfields for a few moments Friday night recaptured moments from my youth while also conjuring up the folk-magic they once showered in abundance over the Tri-Cities area and real country fans alike.

In the end it’s bitter sweet.  Like that old friend that stops by to catch-up they eventually have to return home to their new lives.  Nothing more than a late summer fling Andrews , Quinn and the rest of The Everybodyfields will now return to their lives as solo artists.  Hopefully, the call of their past will draw them home again.  Our ears and hearts could most certainly use another visit from such a friend.

The Avett Brothers

If you have never been to an Avett Brothers show then your life isn’t complete.  This was my sixth venture to an Avett  show since 2006, and as-per-usual they didn’t disappoint.

The Avett’s have an astounding  ability to take the saddest songs from their back catalogue and turn them into lively, dance in a field sing-a-longs that are unrivaled by any other.  Their jams sound like what your grandpa use to play only with a punk rock roots edge, and that’s exactly how they play live.  You’ve honestly seen anyone rock a banjo or cello harder.  It’s not an unusual sight to see a lose string dangling from a tuning knob at an Avett’s show. They play with furious passion and sometimes the emotion is taken out on their instruments.

The Concord, NC natives tend to play in our region a lot.  Don’t let them pass you by next time they are in town.  Their songs and passion are sure to pull you in.
